Publication

Publication is one of the main activities of the institute. Since its establishment, the institute has published several books and booklets. Among the books and booklets that have been published by the institute are Pelaku Berkisah: Ekonomi Indonesia 1950-an sampai 1990-an by Thee Kian Wie (2005); Menjadi Muslim Liberal by Ulil Abshar-Abdalla (2005); Benturan Peradaban : Sikap dan Perilaku Islamis Indonesia terhadap Amerika Serikat by Saiful Mujani et al. (2005); Sastra Indonesia dalam Enam Pertanyaan by Ignas Kleden (2003); Wahyu yang Hilang, Negeri yang Guncang by Onghokham (2003); and Mendobrak Sentralisme Ekonomi by Rizal Mallarangeng (2002). To help Indonesian non-English readers access classical liberal books that it considers to be of perennial influence, the institute translates up to 10 books every year.

The institute cooperates with several commercial publishers for the publication and distribution of these books. In addition, the Freedom Institute has begun to commission a handful of accomplished writers to write books in an effort to encourage the production of original works in the Indonesian language. The mission of these book and library programs is to highlight and spread the foundational ideas of human freedom. Among the books the institute has translated over the past three years are Albert Hourani's Islamic Thoughts in the Liberal Age, Isaiah Berlin's Four Essays on Liberty, Francis Fukuyama's State Building: Governance and the World Order in the 21st Century and The Great Disruption: Human Nature and the Reconstitution of Social Order, and a collection of Alexis De Tocqueville's masterworks edited by John Stone and Stephen Mennell, Alexis de Tocqueville on Revolution, Democracy, and Society.

This year, the institute will translate five more books on classical liberalism, including Richard A. Epstein's Skepticism and Freedom: A Modern Case for Classical Liberalism. The United States Embassy and the Royal Danish Embassy in Jakarta have generously funded these translation projects.
