About the Freedom Institute

Our Mission and Vision
Established in 2001, the Freedom Institute is a non-profit think tank that seeks to promote the idea of individual freedom as the ultimate measure of political, social, economic, and cultural progress in Indonesia. We believe that the ultimate goal of our efforts to build democracy, advance the market economy, and develop nationalism is the creation of a free society that is protected by a strong, yet limited government that operates under rules of law.

Our Programs
The Freedom Institute's programs seek to develop a sound and edifying intellectual climate by encouraging freedom of thought and expression in a responsible and academically-rigorous manner.

To achieve this objective, we conduct several programs:
1. Operate a public library,
2. Sponsor discussions and seminars,
3. Hold radio talk-shows,
4. Translate books,
5. Commission books,
6. Carry out research and public policy campaigns,
7. Confer awards and scholarships,
8. Support training programs for journalists,
9. Host visiting research fellows, and
10. Organize public lectures.

The Future
In the future, we will continue to expand our programs and the scope of our audience. We hope to win more support from both domestic philanthropists and liberal supporters from overseas. To help friends and interested parties understand the institute better, we have recently developed specific program themes. The three themes for 2006-2007 are "Defending the Market Economy," "Promoting Globalization," and "Monitoring Democracy." We hope that all of our public discussions, publications, research, and other events will center on these themes. For example, the institute is in the early stages of translating two books on globalization: A Future Perfect: The Challenge and Hidden Promise of Globalisation (John Micklethwait and Adrian Wooldridge, 2000) and Why Globalization Works (Martin Wolf, 2004). We are also looking for opportunities to work with donors to produce regular, research-based updates concerning civil liberties in Indonesia. The Freedom Institute essentially hopes to further advance liberal causes through our integrated programs, research, and campaigns.
